A FEW TERMS WHICH YOU MIGHT COME ACROSS OFFSHORE

Shifter Adjustable spanner comes in all sizes
Drift / Podger Metal spike used in steel construction
OIM Offshore Installation Manager - has overall responsibility of the rig
Derrick Large tall metal structure which houses the drilling equipment
Top Drive The drill
Drill String Steel tubes which are used to pass fluids to and from the well hole
Draw-works Machine used to haul the Top Drive up the Derrick
Pusher Toolpusher who has responsibility for all activities in the Derrick
The Beach Refers to land when you are offshore
PPE Personal Protective Equipment
Pole Lift / Come Along Device for lifting and restraining loads
Flogger Steel spanner various sizes designed for hitting with a hammer
Barrel Measurement of oil extracted from the ground
Smoko A designated area where smokers can burst into flames either in the main accommadation or out on the rig

Tag-Line

Piece of rope tied to the load which is being lifted. Should not be tied to the lifting gear
Confined Space An area where special equipment is required in order for work to take place.
Bond Everyones favourite place. Most rigs are selling at duty free prices but that is starting to change
Rigging Collective name for equipment used to lift and secure loads
Check In Term used for checking in at the heliport either at Aberdeen or on an installation
Galley Most important place where all meals are served
Speedbird Hotel near Aberdeen Airport where you seem to spend quite a lot of time, in the event on no fly
Bumped Meaning you've been kicked off your flight
Vantage Card A card used to identify the individual and calculate how long he/she has been offshore
Mud Various chemicals that are pumped down the drill hole to cool lubricate and extract cuttings back to the surface
Shakers Machines designed to separate cuttings from the fluid so that it maybe reused
Greenhand/horn Someone new to an installation if flying for the fiirst time will be asked to wear a green armband
Flare Refers to the burning off of excess gas. Mounted on a flare boom either out or up in the air
Flaring Off The burning off of excessive gas at pressure. Normally unexpected and very load noise
Standby Boat A boat which is always in the vicinity of the rig used mainly for overside work

 

 

Obviously these are only some of the terms that you may come across, every different type of job or culture has its own language, so don't be surprised if a foreign worker says something in English and you don't know what it is, we all have our own ways of saying something. If you come across any terms that are not listed above let me know and I will add them in, but bear in mind there will be hundreds so I have only put in ones that I will think you will come arcoss often.
